Each year we dabble with different trends that define our imagery – be it for art, editorial or commercial purposes. The year 2021 is no different, with a range of social issues, movements and new technologies colliding to create fresh trends that define creative spaces like this.

So, here are some of the leading trends that we are embracing right now. Try weaving these into your portfolio for an extra edge in 2021.

  • Bringing generations together: The fusion of ages has become a hot photography trend, and many families are looking for tasteful, creative and arty images of their youngest members with their most senior members.
  • Female empowerment: We are not talking about cliched images of women flexing their bicep. Movements like Time’s Up and pushes against the gender pay gap have raised the issues of equality to the top in 2020 and images of strong women in vital roles or settings to make for incredible and striking snaps.
  • Smoke bombs: Time to have some fun. Coloured smoke bombs allow you to get creative in a raft of new ways. Safety first, though.
  • Batman photography: Thought ’emo’ was dead? Dark and gloomy, noir-style photography never truly went out of fashion, and moody images filled with blacks and greys are back in style in a big way this year.
  • Protests: The world is changing. People are hitting the streets en masse to protest human rights with the Black Lives Matter movements across the globe the biggest of 2020. And protests always deliver strong images.
  • Candid images: This has previously been a trend because of social media platforms and the desire of people wanting to be snapped in natural settings, doing what they love and looking their best. Now, this is also becoming a trend in visual art, fashion and editorial brands of photography with less posing and more rawness, reality and emotion.
  • Vertical images: Almost wholly inspired by the smartphone generation, portrait images are back in vogue because that is what is being generated from the powerful cameras housed inside the devices of the everyday person in 2020.
  • Big and bright colours: Yes we know that we mentioned that dark and gloomy was also in this year, but there is room for both. Huge neon bursts, graffiti and colours that glow or pop are also very popular, albeit with a different demographic.
  • Drones: A natural progression as the technology becomes more advanced, more affordable and more mainstream.
  • Diversity: Many walls have been broken down in recent years, and the celebration of diversity in all its forms in photography is being wholly embraced.
