How to straighten an image in Photoshop? 2021 Best Crooked & straighten Guides

How to straighten an image in Photoshop? 2021 Best Crooked & straighten Guides

Let’s keep it clear at the beginning if you didn’t use a tripod for every single photo you take, it’s going to be impossible to keep them all straight and not a bit crooked. Especially if you’re considering pictures, you take on a vacation tourist trip, which is being taken in a harry and casually, capturing the happiest and most memorable moments during the trip.

In this tutorial, you’re going to learn how to save these moments and straighten your crooked images in Photoshop cc with quick and easy steps, although it may look like a hidden feature.

Unlike most photo editing programs, in Photoshop cc, the Straighten tool may look a bit hidden and not easy to discover, especially with the older versions, which used to adopt a way harder process to straighten a photo. Though, in Photoshop cc, it became easier to straighten your photos after Adobe decided to include the straightening feature within the cropping tool.

  • Open your image and choose the Crop tool.

Go to File and choose Open from the sliding bar to open your image, then select the Crop tool (or press C) as shown in the tutorial image below.

In Photoshop cc, you can straighten your image using the Crop tool in two ways.

  • Straighten your image using the Straighten tool

As a new feature added to the crop tool in the more recent Photoshop versions (CS6 & CC), you can see the Straighten tool on the toolbar.

Select the Straighten tool and start dragging a (vertical or horizontal) line along with the element that should be vertical or horizontal in the image. In our example, we should drag our line along the sea horizon line.

After releasing the line, your image will be straightened automatically using the line you dragged as a guide, and the leftover edges of your image will be cropped away.

Now, before confirming your crop, notice the Delete Cropped Pixels icon shown below on the toolbar.

If this icon was activated (as in our example), your image’s cropped edges will be permanently deleted and not being accessible after confirming the crop. While if the icon was not activated, it will reduce just the canvas size to match the new crop of the image and only hide the extra pixels without deleting them.

In our example, we’ll just keep the Delete Cropped Pixels icon activated and confirm the crop by pressing Enter or click the tick mark as shown below.

  • Straighten your image by rotation

Another way to straighten your image in Photoshop cc is by rotating it using the same Crop tool. Simply hover your mouse a little bit outside one of the corners of your image and start dragging.

Once you start dragging, a grid display will be shown inside the crop box to use as a guide to help you straighten your image. The downside to this process is that it can be less accurate than straightening the image using the Straighten tool.

Once you’re happy with your results, press Enter or click the tick mark to confirm your crop, and you’re good to go publishing your photo as a straight edge professional image with the help of Photoshop cc.

  • Final output Straighten your image .
How to Extend background in Photoshop: 2021 Guides

How to Extend background in Photoshop: 2021 Guides

Have you ever had a perfect shot to use as a cover photo on social media or your website except that it had tight edges, and you wished you had it just a little bit wider to add your logo over it or just to fit the cover size?

Don’t worry; you will not have to take this shot again; thanks to the magical Photoshop, you can fix this in a few simple steps. In this tutorial, you will learn how to extend your background and fix its tightness without distorting your main subject. So, let’s stretch some pixels here.

First Step: Prepare you’re layer & Adjusting your Canvas

After getting your image on Photoshop*, the first thing you have to do is click on this lock icon to edit your image on a transparent canvas space. If you didn’t remove it, your new canvas will be automatically filled with your default solid background color.

Canv 1-1

* You can open your image on Photoshop by simply drag and drop the image anywhere into the workspace or go to File → Open and then choose your image to open it.

Now let’s adjust the canvas size and add some extra space to it. You can do this using two different ways; the first of them is by going to Image → Canvas Size

Canv 1-2

Then on the Canvas Size box, decide the direction you want to expand your image by clicking the arrow pointing to the opposite direction. For instance, if you want to extend the right side of your image click on the arrow pointing to the left, and vice versa.

Canv 1-3

Also, make sure to uncheck the Relative choice as shown above, so you can adjust your canvas from one side without affecting the whole image size. Then change the Width of your image to whatever size you need to extend your image for. In my case, I will change my width from 1920 to 3000 pixels.

Canv 1-4

Another way to change your canvas size is by using the Cropping Tool by simply pressing C on your keyboard or selecting the Crop Tool from the toolbar.

Make sure to clear the cropping ratio by clicking Clear on the top bar and simply start to extend the edge of your image.

Canv 2-1
Canv 1-4

Second Step: Fill your extended canvas by using Content-Aware Scale

After expanding your canvas size, it’s time to fill that extended space by stretching the image using Content-Aware Scale. And as in step one, there are two ways to stretch your image, so let’s begin with the first one.

First, go to Edit and select Content-Aware Scale.

Con Aware 1

Make sure to uncheck this little connection icon between width and height to extend image width without affecting the height.

Then simply start to drag your edge*.

Con Aware 2

* A quick hack here: while dragging the edge of your image, notice for any distortion starts to appear in the background details and stop dragging just before the point when this distortion begins to happen.

Con Aware 3-3

Before you have this, press Enter to end your content extending process, go to Edit, select Content-Aware Scale, and start dragging again. Repeat this process for a new content-aware recognition each time when you begin noticing detail distortion until you feel that you have extended your image to its maximum limit.

Once you reach the image maximum limit of extension, press Enter to end Content-Aware Scaling, select the Cropping tool from the toolbar or simply press C on your keyboard and crop any empty spaces left on your canvas.

Marquee tool 6

And here is the result.

finale result

Now let’s move to the second way you can extend your background with.

Extend your background using Marquee Tool

The second way depends on selecting a specific area on the background and extending it rather than stretching the whole image. Here is how you do it.

After expanding your canvas size, select the Marquee Tool from the toolbar or simply press M on your keyboard and start to select the part of the background you are going to extend.

Marquee tool 1
Marquee tool 2

After making your selection, go to Edit Content-Aware Scaling and drag the image edge towards the empty space.

Marquee tool 3

This will extend the only selected area and leave the rest of the image without affecting it.

Marquee tool 4

After extending your background to its most, deselect your selection, and Crop any extra empty spaces on your canvas.

Marquee tool 5
Marquee tool 6

And you are done.

Notice that using the Marquee Tool extended only the selected area on the image without changing the main subject’s position (the man standing). Unlike using only Content-Aware Scaling, which changes the whole image’s scale to fit its new size.

final result 2

The use of the Marquee Tool is more distinctive when your main subject of the photo is in the middle of the image, and you want to extend the background from only one side and excluding the other; in such case, the Marquee Tool is the perfect choice to get the job done.

Conclusion

Not every image can be extended, and Some photos might be easier to extend than the others as it depends on the content of the background you have. Still, Adobe Photoshop gives you the ability to extend the background of your images easily and accurately.

In the example we had, I intentionally used a kind of busy background to show how this process can affect the background details. As you notice, Photoshop has done a pretty much good job extending the image without distorting the details, yet, the main rule of success in this process is (the less content you have in the background, the easier and wider you can extend your image).

designed for high-level image editing, which means that it stands out above
other products on the market for professional results.

Photoshop Cc vs Photoshop

So, why select Photoshop CC over standard Photoshop? Well, as is becoming common, Photoshop CC is more of a service as compared to standard Photoshop. For this reason, you’ll be paying a monthly service fee to extend the license of your Photoshop CC. For example, Photoshop is a one-time payment, but for some, this can be a prohibitive price to pay.

Since Photoshop CC is a subscription-based product, it’s much easier for smaller businesses. This is because you get the same level of image editing quality without having to deal with that initial large buy-in.

If you’re wondering what the “CC” stands for, it means “Creative Cloud,” which is a
significant indicator of the model that the software uses. With CC, you can access the software from external computers as long as you have the subscription. This makes it very convenient.

Photoshop CC vs Photoshop
CS

software solutions are very convenient to use for image editing, but since
Photoshop CC is cloud-based, updates are much more regular and reliable. Having said all of this, the two software solutions are 100 percent viable; in fact,
the experience is very similar between the two products.

With that taken into consideration, this business model works well for some image editors; since Adobe keeps the software up to date, the near-constant changes can be very advantageous.

Additionally, Photoshop
Creative Cloud also features some of the options that were only available to those with Photoshop Extended. For example, this includes 3D editing, 3D image creation, and quantitative image analysis tools.

of Photoshop Elements is its “lite” functionality. In most cases, the full feature set of Photoshop is seldom used by most users; in fact, features like clipping path aren’t used by the majority of Photoshop owners. Over time,
Adobe has beefed up the features of Photoshop Elements, and the experience has become a lot more beginner-friendly.

With all of that taken
into account, Photoshop CC has a much more professional-grade image editing output. Where Elements might walk you through the clipping path process, CC
might assume you understand the process. At the very least, you might need to lookup an online FAQ/tutorial to really understand the nuts and bolts of the program.

For example, Photoshop
Elements feature a guided view that will literally show you how to perform each of the functions that the platform is capable of. These include how to make adjustments or edit your images so that they take on the appearance that you’re looking for. There is also an expert mode in Photoshop Elements; even
this mode is much more beginner-friendly than many of the modes available in
Photoshop CC.

with this cloud-based program. Here is a list of features you don’t get with

You can even modify the curves after you have the entire image selected so that no part is cut off. Additionally, straight lines how much more straightforward to angle with the Pen Tool.

Before considering spending on a digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera for product photography, why not consider using the high-resolution camera of your smartphone which you carry everywhere? That may sound crazy and a bit unprofessional, but, hey, it’s the 21st century – that isn’t the case anymore! Smartphone photography for e-commerce

Smartphone photography: The pros and cons

Practical benefits: Apart from being budget-friendly, this option offers convenience and portability, while not sacrificing on the quality of your images. The compact design of smartphones allows us to carry them wherever we go: they are light, flat and fit in any pocket. There are therefore hardly any limits to photography.

Easy sharing on e-commerce sites and social networks: Sharing your images on product sites and on social networks has never been as easy as it is today. With this option, your target customers, friends, relatives, and acquaintances can always stay in the picture.

Creativity: The range of versatile apps for editing your own pictures seems to be endless. These are usually available for free or for very little money. This not only enables the user to work with the classic image processing from their smartphone, but also filters the unwanted elements from your product images.

Cost factor: If it should not be just the iPhone of the latest generation, then good smartphones are already available from about $200. Conversely, you have to put a considerable amount of money on the table for a passable compact camera.

Image quality: The quality of smartphone-captured photos has its pros and cons. For example, where the resolution is absolutely sufficient for most purposes, it fails because of printing in large format. So the photographer should think carefully about the purpose of his pictures and in some cases, he should prefer to use his conventional camera. In addition, digital offers more extensive options.

Digital zoom and megapixels: Since most devices are equipped with digital zoom only, zooming in on the image will result in a significant loss of image quality. In other words, the results are very pixelated. In addition, most smartphones are not yet equipped with enough megapixels. Here, digital cameras are still in the lead.

Macro Photography: Similar to close-ups, smartphone photographs are not yet possible in the sense of macro photography. It would be useful to find out where the focus range of your device begins.

Tips for taking quality photography with a smartphone

Are you fully familiar with the functions of your camera app? If not, familiarize yourself with them, because the standard features can be quite substantial: In addition to the self-timer and filter menu, most applications have automatic face detection, various image formats, video, and slow motion, HDR and more. Just play around for a while – you’ll be surprised what your smartphone camera can do!

  1. Determine the focus itself

This gives you control over the different levels of sharpness and image composition. Simply set the automatic focusing of your smartphone. If you now touch a certain point in your picture, the camera will focus on the desired area of the picture.

  1. Actively design the screen layout

First, think about what you want to photograph and look around before you hit the trigger. Ask yourself the following questions: What else is happening in the environment of my desired subject? Is the sun shining or are there great clouds in the sky? Is there a way to give my object a new perspective?

Are there recurring lines? Where is the sun? Are there interesting shadows? Shadowplay is a great way to get very interesting pictures.

Contouring is a central theme for image composition. Are there lines that lead into an image? Are there symmetries and repeating patterns? Are there several image layers that add depth to the image?

Include these things in your picture, because that creates tension and makes a really good picture more interesting!

Play around, what does your subject look like when you shoot it from the top, bottom, left or right? Squat, stand on a chair and give your subject a little room.

  1. Ensure the right exposure

Do not rely on the automatic exposure correction of your smartphone, but rather ensure the correct white balance. Simply tap another point on the display of your device. If this does not work, you must deactivate the automatic setting in the settings. By the way: if you are already there, you can also switch off the flash directly. Lightning often causes hopeless overexposure – so use it only when you really need it.

  1. Use the High Dynamic Range (HDR)

The High Dynamic Range, also known as HDR, is responsible for contrasting your images. A feature that is likely to be on any modern smartphone and it turns out to be very useful. Thus, particularly large brightness differences are reproduced in an extremely detailed manner.

All modern smartphones have an HDR function, but many people are still unaware of how useful it is. The HDR mode takes three pictures at different exposures and highlights the best parts of each photo. Your phone will then do all the work for you: it will create a standard and an HDR photo. The result should be more like what the eyes see than what the camera sees.

  1. Use touch-up apps for more creativity

You will not get a perfect rendering of all your photos so feel free to take advantage of the various mobile phone photo editing applications. Instagram, Photo, Candy Cam & Co.: take advantage of the power of your App Store. Get creative with filters and beautify your product images.

  1. Practical accessories for smartphone photography

As already mentioned, real macro shots are not possible with the smartphone itself. It looks the same with the wide angle and the fisheye. However, if you do not want to do without these options, various manufacturers now have practical slip-on lenses available for them.

  1. Sometimes the image stabilizer helps

With an image stabilizer, your image may appear less blurry. However, with some cameras, the image stabilizer is just an electronic trick that does not bring that much. In addition, you may not be able to adjust an electronic stabilizer if you previously set certain other settings in the camera control. Some Nokia phones, on the other hand, have a built-in optical stabilizer – like large cameras or interchangeable lenses. Then your shots will appear less shaky at long shutter speeds (even videos are better with image stabilizer).

  1. Clean up your lens

Before you even take photos with your smartphone, wipe your lens. Dust and dirt deposited on it will give a grainy result to your product photos.

  1. Choose high resolution

The higher the resolution of your photograph, the higher the quality will turn out to be. Precision will bring your smartphone photos a much more professional result. However, you should note that the bigger your files are, the more difficult they are to store.

  1. Familiarize yourself with the software

You will probably be surprised to discover everything you can do with the camera of your smartphone. All the best smartphone cameras usually have the panorama, HDR, and bokeh features, as well as basics like video, flash, and auto mode. Knowing where these options are will allow you to not waste time searching your settings and not miss out on something.

  1. Do not move while shooting

It is important to follow the same basic rules of digital camera photography when using the camera on your smartphone. Thus, it is imperative not to move in order to take the best shot. You can put your phone on a rigid object such as a tree or wall to create an improvised tripod.

  1. Trim, do not zoom

Zooming on the camera on your smartphone will decrease the quality of your images. The best smartphone cameras often have a resolution of 8 megapixels or more, which means that you can trim greatly while maintaining excellent photo quality.

How to take quality photos considering the weather

Smartphone photos are better when taken in the sun but smartphone lenses and sensors are not yet as powerful as the full-blown traditional cameras.

Here are our tips for taking pictures when the weather is nice:

  • Avoid very harsh contrasts such as deep shadows and bright skies in a single image.
  • The sun should not shine directly into the cell phone lens – this disfigures cell phone pictures significantly.
  • In-Camera Control, test different settings for natural or vivid colors such as landscape, portrait, or white balance for different light sources.
  • Capture objects that look good with the wide-angle lens of a camera phone, such as expansive landscapes or cityscapes. A bird on the power pole always seems too small in the phone photo.

Clipping Path InDesign Exploring Skill up your graphics design

For any aspiring graphic designer, it is important you know that the Adobe Creative Suite features an array of programs, whether for web design, graphic design, professional photography, and so on. However, these graphic design products overlap in a lot of ways and functions. One of such functions where you find this overlap is the area of clipping paths. Sometimes, you can be confused as to which of the product is right for you. While many of the major graphic design products (Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign) can be used, let’s focus on the InDesign for the purpose of this article.

How it works

InDesign allows you to create clipping paths and also works with clipping paths already created and imported – whether in the form of JPEG, TIFF, Photoshop image Photoshop EPS. Regardless of the source of the clipping path, InDesign allows you to modify it. However, the easiest way that a clipping path can be added to an image is by creating the path in Photoshop, then import the image into InDesign.

Creating a clipping path in InDesign

Like already stated, anybody can create a clipping path in InDesign with the use of a drawing tool.

Here’s how:

  • Choose File→ this should help you locate an image. Afterward, use the drawing tool to generate a path on the top of the image.
  • Now, using the Selection tool, click to select the image of choice and then cut (this you can by choosing File→ Cut).
  • Now select the shape you have just made and then choose Edit→ Paste Into.

Creating a clipping path with Photoshop and then import to InDesign

An alternative is to create the path on the image in Photoshop and then import into InDesign.

Here’s how:

After you have used the Path tool in Photoshop to create the path in the image and saved as a PSD, EPS, or TIFF file, import it into InDesign. To do this chooses File→ Place. This should take the Import Options dialog and select ‘Apply Photoshop Clipping Path‘. InDesign now clips the image accordingly.

Refining the path

After you have imported the image from Photoshop, InDesign allows you to alter its clipping path. To do this you use the direct selecting tool and select the image you intend to refine. The imported clipping path will appear. Now, you can click and drag on any points along the path in order to reshape and refine. This is fairly easy.

Every graphic designer knows and recognizes InDesign as one of the most important programs for graphic designs. It is important that you know the inside and out, as the program is gradually gaining popularity amongst other similar products. You can use it for editing and creation of all kinds of visually related materials. InDesign allows you to design virtually anything – from postcards to invitation, brochures, magazines, posters, and even books.

Never again should you be confused in the choice of Adobe Creative Suite programs to use for clipping paths.
